According to the NE tractor tests in 1953 the JD 60 had 41 hp on the belt and 37 hp on the drawbar. In 1952 the Super M had 47 hp on the belt and 44 on the drawbar. Both these tests were on tractors of the same fuel type. Based on that information the SM would have the 60 for lunch in any type of pulling contest. The JD 70 was 48 hp on the belt and 42 on the drawbar so would have been fairly close. My dad shelled a lot of corn and when the loaders came out to push the corn into the dragline, he always dreaded the guys with a hand clutch. He said you should have one hand to steer, one hand to run the loader, another to shift from forwards to reverse and one to run the clutch which was two more than he had. JD advantage went to power steering, three-point hitch, and ease of clutch maintenance. Their drawbacks were the hand clutch and intermittent power pulses causing the belt to “ripple” under a hard load. Both were pretty much bullet proof.
