All older tractors make some noise in the transmission and rear end. It will never be as quiet as a car transmission because of the straight cut gears, but it shouldn't be loud enough to hurt your ears either. I guess I would say that a steady humm is acceptable. It may change a little under load, but it shouldn't really come and go at various intervals, it should be pretty constant. According to some people I have talked to, louder transmissions are caused by mixing new gears with old gears during a rebuild. Because they aren't worn in together, they make a little more noise. Don't know if that is true or not. . .
