The Ballast Resistor wires in series in the Ignitions Primary Circuit AFTER the Ignition Switch (its IGN output terminal, hot when ON) and BEFORE the input to the Coil, being the coils lil input (NOT to distributor) terminal. That way when the Ignition is on and the points are closed, it draws current and drops approximately 6 volts, leaving 6 on the coil as it was designed for. That way the coil dont overcurrent and overheat and the points switch the proper current so they last as they should. I like to mount the ballast where its somewhat protected from damage and direct rainfall and secure its mounting clamp to metal of the tractor to help transfer heat away from it. They would ideally be near the same resistance of the coil but many off the shelf are like 1.5 to 1.85 ohms and 25 or more wattas, wirewound power units in a ceramic bathtub enclosure. John T
