Hydraulics on a 1949 cub

I'm rebuilding the hydraulics (not the pump ) on a 1949 cub. I'm putting new "O" rings in the hydraulic housing and the manual says to use a twisting motion to install the piston with the new "O" rings. I've put fluid on them and even with a twisting motion I can not get it to go back in. Can anyone give me some ideas on how to compress the "O" ring so that I can get it back in? Help.
