Jeff, There are two notches in the rear flange of the crankshaft pulley. #1 piston is at TDC when the first mark is aligned with the pointer on the crankcase front cover. It's timed properly then. Standing on the distributor side of the engine, the crank pulley marks will be moving away from you since the crank rotates clockwise as viewed from the front. I think you'll understand it when you see it. Phil
