tachometer of Farmall 340

The tachometer on my Farmall 340 quit working. Seems to me the problem is in the gear assembly for the tachometer drive. If I put an electric drill on the tach cable, the tachometer runs fine. I connect the cable to the tach drive near the distributor, and the tach will work for awhile and then stop. Seems like the cable is not connecting to something or a gear is stripped or something in the drive. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, if parts needed are available Case IH.
