The starter really doesn't care about the polarity, but what ever is charging the battery might have a problem with it, I just use the 6 volt starters on the old stuff just in case I ever decide to switch them back to original, have 2 Farmall's that have 6 volt starters that have run on 12 volts for over 20 years, just don't run the starter very long or you will over heat it, if everything is right, they start real fast..
