Again, I'm not a petroleum engineer but my understanding is that it is easier to refine diesel than gasoline. That's why when oil was down in the $30 per barrel range diesel was cheaper than gasoline. Now with oil up in the $60 per barrel range, even though it is cheaper and easier to refine diesel, it costs more because it takes more oil to produce. I tried looking on google to find out exact numbers but all I got were a few vague references saying that it does take more oil to produce diesel than gasoline.
