Diesel is less expensive to produce than gasoline! Gasoline requires more steps in the refinement process. The reason it has become more expensive relative to gas over the last few years is because of the increased popularity of diesel engines in non-commercial vehicles. They want a bigger piece of that action. In California diesel it is refined a bit more (i think an additive) to meet the famous Cal EPA requirements and it has a higher road tax. We have red diesel for agriculture and it does not have the road tax. If you are caught with red deisel in a road vehicle there is a hefty fine....even if you are a farmer. And yes the California Highway Patrol supposedly has testing kits thogh I've never seen one or been tested.
