706 shifting troubles

hi, i just bought a 706 and have only found one thing wrong so far. It seems to shift hard, iam not sure why and it seems to slip out of reverse sometimes. sometimes it takes a couple trys to get it to stay in reverse .Ive never had anything bigger than a 460 so this is all new to me. Can it be fixed by adjusting the linkage or is it more complicated than that.
