Well if it is smoking then it is getting fuel so then the glow plugs are not working so i would be checking the glow plug relay and maybe the glow plugs .The shut down seleniod is a round metal deal with and arm -rod comming out of it going to the lever on the injection pump and there are some wires going to the back of it , when you turn the key on this opens the furl valve in the pump when the key is turned off a spring pushes it foward to shut off the fuel . when this does not work then there is no smoke . If the glowplugs don't work there is smoke but no fire it could be just a stuck relay.
