Connected to provide the correct voltage, 12v batteries will work. The batteries should be measured to fill the space to the max (including depth to allow for connections). Crank amps, and Cold crank amps, are the primary starting considerations, the higher the better. Warrantee always makes a difference as well. The highest performance batteries (that I am aware of) are Gell Cell batteries. (as much as 1100 Crank amps) and can be mounted in any position.
