If the crack is from Ice or other internal force pushing out, and is not structural. I would clean the area around the crack with a wire brush till it was shiny then use a flexible epoxy material to coat on a layer about 1/8" thich in the middle, tapering to the edges. Hooking a vacuum cleaner to the fill plug can assist in getting the oil out of the crack, and pulling epoxy in while it hardens! If it is structural, I would recommend replacing the housing. (or entire rear end) Welding is possible, I would remove all signs of brass, drill small 1/8"dia holes at the ends of the crack, "V" the crack almost through the thickness, and use Ni rod to fill the groove. Weld an inch, stop and use a pick hammer or weld slag hammer to peen the boogers out of the bead. Then weld another short pass (1") and peen again. I've welded transmission tunnels on Ford 4000 tractors, where the single sided loader attaches (a foot ball sized chunk), with success. Patience, good practice, and a nice welder. JimN
