I"m no expert. But when IH came with their 6 cylinder engines they had problems with those engines burning valves. They determined that the ash level of the oil was leaving deposits on the valves that caused hot spots and those hot spots would basically torch through the valves. The problem seemed to be from the higher RPM that the 6 cylinders run at. From what I"ve heard, that is why IH recommends their low ash oil for their gas tractors. There are explanations having to do with the amount of time the valves are open and closed under load with the governor giving full fuel, creating heat that can't be passed to the head. IH decided the cure was to use an oil with a low ash content. Don't take this as gospel, but it is what I heard. Many oil suppliers have oil with low ash levels. Hope this helps.
