After all the years of use the shifter levers and the shift rails get worn. You can fix it by removing the lever from the top of the transmission and building up as others suggested. Oversize it, then grind it down just so it fits and shifts smooth. Temporary (very) solution is to shift slow, make deliberate front/back movement to make sure the shift rail hits the neutral position before moving the lever sideways. Until the shifter is removed and built up fast U shaped shifts are going to result in the transmission being stuck in a gear
