The mild spring pressure, the slow speed of the engine, and the largish size of the surfaces seem to work well. Many modern auto engines, including Volvo and other "quality" marques, use no inserts at all with great success. If they get surface rust in them, use 1000 grit or finer crocus cloth to polish it out. spray with LPS corrosion inhibitor to prevent rust.
