Farmall MD When Running on Gas

Hey Folks
Got the MD running good on Diesel, but runs poorly on gas, REAL ruff, the odd backfire. Sounds like it could be timing? the distributor is moved as far Counterclockwise as it can be adjusted, (like that when i bought it) I moved it clockwise and it got worse. Also i noticed when i took the carb apart that it apeared that a piece of the float was broke off. Could that cause it. One more question on the Injection Pump, (IH made) there is a spring loaded cover what is that? What is its purpose. Thanks for the advice
