Replacing the ring gear is easy once you have the flywheel off
the engine. If you have an oxyacetylene torch and are good with
it, you can do it yourself. If one of the above does not apply,
take it somewhere that knows how to replace it. Basically, you
remove the old one by cutting it with the torch. THe new one is
expanded gently with heat, (heat treating oven is best, but the
torch works too), and setting it inplace on the flywheel until it
cools, and shrinks to lock it in place. I would never bother with
trying to turn an old ring gear. Not worth the hassle.
