Mike: If you were new to a 656 as recently as two years ago, I can understand it sounding slow. 1800 rpm is standard 540 pto speed and the tractor will be most likely governed at 2000. That is quite slow compared to most of the engines around farm tractor world since 1980. Hook it up to the baler and count the strokes of plunger per min. That will give you a good idea. That is how we did the old 300 before the days of tach's.
