Dont know what old would say, but we used to drain the sludge then fill crankcase with 4qts kerosene to 1qt oil and let it run 10 minutes then let it drain all night. Then fill with oil and run for 1 days work then drain again and refill.

There is different ways of doing it for everyone.

You might put a can of DEEP CREEP in the gas to help clean valves.
