The model numbers from the hundred series to the 88 series pretty much just gives you a time frame of the tractors once your familiar with the line up and in most cases if its an International utility or a Farmall row crop. The last two digits always gives you the series, such as the 06, 56, 66, 86, 88 series tells that these are the big dog Farmall row crop tractors and the 04, 44, 54, 64, 84 series states these as the Inernational utility tractors. Now the numbers in front of the series # gives you an idea the size of the tractor but doesn't tell you the hp. Once you know the range of hp in a series you can get an idea about what one particular tractor might be. For example the 50, 52, and 5488 hp range is about 135 for the 5088, 154 for the 5288, and 181 for the 5488. To make it more cornfusing for ya, in the 88 series there is the 30 series (odds and evens make a difference) and the 50 series. First the odd 30's, the 33, 35, and 3788 were the 2+2 tractors. The even 30's were 30, 32, 34, and I think a 3688. These were the smaller row crop tractors with basically the same transmission and rear end as the 06 series. The 50 series stated above in hp difference was a bigger tractor with a new transmission. I hope this will give you an idea how the numbers work in the IH line up and maybe somebody else can put their 2 cents in as well with more info.
