Thank you for your insight John. The 2 operable M's in my stable consist of an orginal tractor (draw bar only, narrow front, 12 volt, belly hydraulics, value of about $1200 to $1500) and the working tractor (wide front end, 3-point hitch, good (75%) tires, 12 volt, live remote hydraulics, good lites and 15 year old paint, wheel weights, straight sheet metal and good condition engine and drive train). Neither tractor has left our 300 acre permanent crop and open cash crop farm since I purchased them about 20 years ago. In central California, 50 to 70 hp modern diesel tractors are very prevalent. I have a MF 255 diesel (1981) which is used as a backup utility tractor which is probably only worth $5000 to $6500 while JD mass-produced 2 cylinders from the 1950's are listed for sale between $2500 to $4500. Some how the collector market value has went wacko. I also still use a IH 1566 TA for the heavy tilling jobs and a 2640 JD for orchard work. I plan to keep the "M" and add or replace older components to update a "1940" design tractor with features which enhance the functional ability of the M. Money spent on this tractor can not be recouped by resale but by continous use on the farm. I enjoy going down to the shop in the evening to work on a selected project until completion. My 1998 JD 5510 4wd/cab cost me about $43000. I am still looking for information on engine components necessary to increase the horsepower of the M. Sincerely, Ray
