It is a planetary drive system located between the engine's master clutch and the transmission input shaft. It allows full load downshifting or upshifting between 2 speeds without clutching or slowing down When the lever is ahead, the TA is running in direct mode, which means that the gears inside the case are stationary, and the entire housing as a whole rotates. In this setting, engine braking will hold the tractor back on hills. When the lever is pulled back, The case is locked in position using a clutch (I think it is a sprag clutch) and the gears inside begin turning, providing a gear reduction. In this setting, the carrier is only held tight in one direction, meaning that the case is only held to keep it from turning from engine torque. When the tractor is going down a hill, the torque from the wheels are now trying to apply torque to the engine, and the clutch slips over and the tractor free-wheels down a hill with no engine braking. If someone pushes the TA forward to get engine braking while it is free-wheeling, it will grenade, throwing parts all over the inside of the torque tube, and disconnecting the engine permanently from the transmission. However if it is used in the proper manner, it will last a pretty long time. My grandpa had a 340 and a 460 with TA's. Both left with the same TA installed 20 years later. On the other hand I've heard some TA's lasting only a couple years. It all depends on adjustment, and how it was used.
