Nick: I have to agree with guys like old and Paul. For 6 volt those cables got be O gauge. Older cables also break down. I started a good 40 years ago, every 8 to 10 years a vehicle gets new battery cables, regardless of how they look. It has paid off for me, I get exceptional battery life, for a northern climate.

I've just put a new 6 volt battery in my Super A. The last new battery was installed 13 years ago. The last new O gauge cables with soldered on ends were installed about 4 years ago.

I've seen this many times, all the way from SA to 6 cylinder turbo diesels, tractor gets a bit sluggish on starting. Most guys run out and buy a new battery without even giving a thought to cables. Some even refuse to believe it may be nothing more than cables. I remember once being around a construction site, a young lad had been sent to get this Deere excavator. He asked me to give him a boost. I replied, " The way that machine turned over first 3 turns of starter, it's the cables, you don't need a boost". I helped him and with a combination of 6 sets of vice grips, and two heavy jump cables (not to my battery) were had that thing turning over A-one. Interesting thing is the owner manager of the company appeared on the sceene, saw my contraption hook up, decided that Deere needed new batteries. They put in the new batteries, same old cables and within 10 days, starting problems were back. The owner would not give in to the fact it needed cables, they wasted a hour everyday getting that machine going. Three months later the company was out of business.
