You are right on all counts. If you lubed the actuating balls or slots[grooves], they would collect brake dust & field dirt & tend to plug the functioning parts to the point of having to clean everything up again in a short period of time. As long as the brake plates are clean & free of rust & dirt, your brake job will last a long time. When we did our SC brakes, We just about went over the steering wheel the first couple of times the brakes were applied.
