From what you have said, I would suspect the coil may have burned up. You probably need a resistor on the power to the coil. Many 12 volt coils are not designed for 12 volt operation. In these applications, the coil receives 12 volts for a hot spark while starting and then the voltage to the coil is droppped through a resistor during normal operation.
