You sort of answereds your own question. You said the battery cable gets very hot. Well most of the time a cable getting hot is one of 2 things. ! and bad cable. 2 a starter that is going bad. Either way now that you have smoked a battery cable you need to replace it. Don't buy an auto type cable becuase they just don't dut it. You need and 0 or 00 cable and then go from there
