856 diesels do not have glow plugs. They were a bit hard to start when the temperature dropped to about 35 or so, but I believe IH came up with a cure for that by building higher compression pistons which were then included in the overhaul kit. I used to own an 856 and wish I still had it, although I have absolutely no need for such an animal.
