What motor do you have I have a 1956 300 with a c169 i just rebuilt. All the timing cover bolts were 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, none with nuts on them. there are a couple that come in from the rear through the hdy. pump that were longer but not the front cover nuts as you decribed
