The spring that pushes the central shaft outward to the end of the housing will occassionally break. That can be replaced, and while doing so order yourself a new set of thrust washers also. These things self destruct after many years. You also might check how much slop you have on the speed control lever that goes into that housing on the side, I ended up making a new shaft along with reaming that bore to a uniform size.
