On mine, two pins and four bolts had broken that internally hold the PTO housing together. I couldn't even find a couple of the bolts so I think someone worked on it before but did a poor job.

Removing the PTO was not too complicated. A manual helps but all you really do (on mine anyway) is remove four bolts and pull it straight out. But to get to it, you have to remove some of the 3-point hitch. Again, not too hard. Put something under the opening to catch hydraulic fluid. When you get inside, it should be obvious where the problem is. I used a tap to remove the pins and broken bolts. Then I made new pins from 3/8 shoulder bolts and put it all back together.

The grinding came from an aluminum gear getting chewed up by the steel differential gear. Bad news. Mind wasn't too bad so I put it back in and it's running fine. The gear doesn't mesh, it simply interlocks, so a little wear shouldn't hurt. Don't wait too long to replace it though.

I finished it in about four hours plus a trip to the store for bolts and hydraulic fluid. If your gasket tears on removal, you will need to order a new one, make one, or maybe use permatex.
