Do not trim the seals at all!!!! It will leak.
Basically all you do is soak the seal halves in oil for a bit. I left mine over night. Then install them in the seal retainer. I over hanged mine to cover the area where the 2 halves come together. Then install the top half of the retainer and gasket. After that put the bottom half up to the top half and use the cap screws ( shown by arrow in photo) to draw the 2 halves together. This compresses the seal around the shaft. Then tighten the 2 bottom bolts on the retainer.
