Short of replacing the seal retainer, sand all the factory sealant off of the OD of the new seal, clean the OD of the seal and the ID of the bore with carb cleaner spray, and allow to dry. Lighly coat the OD of the seal and the ID of the bore with Loctite high-strength retaining compound, and install the seal.
