Rob, Im a lil cornfused about what you call the "orange wire" on the solenoid thats hot all the time??????????? The 2 big battery cables (or a cable and a strap to starter) on the 2 big solenoid terminals are obvious, one is from the battery while the other wires to the starter motor lug with a big cable or strap which becomes hot n energized when the solenoid pulls in and closes. If that "orange" wire is attached to the big battery cable, sure, it would indeed be ALWAYS HOT and often such a wire is the main voltage feed up to an ammeter etc to power up loads like lights and the main switch etc. To energize the solenoid so it pulls in and switches the 2 big terminals together is what requires a switched feed wire down from the push to start switch. Such an activation wire (from push switch) connects to a very small terminal somewhere on the solenoid NOT to the big battery cable terminal. You need to insure the wire down from the push switch connects to a small solenoid terminal and that when it has voltage it engages the solenoid. On the solenoids with 2 lil terminals one is the S activation terminal (wired to pushbutton) while the other is the I terminal which is hot ONLY while the solenoid is engaged. If the solenoid is good it would engage if you use a lil jumper wire to momentarily flash the big battery supply cable over to the solenoids lil S activation terminal. Tell us more about the orange wire and where its connected and about any wire down from the push switch to some small solenoid terminal and maybe we can guide you further........ John T
