Brian my 53 SM got to where it would barely turn over, and as you said you needed to hold your mouth just right to catch it. I took the starter into Auto electric in Ft Collins Colorado. On the phone they assured me they had a good rebuilt in stock... NOT !!! But they did rebuild mine in 3 hours. The bushing at the back of the starter had failed and the rotor had cut a notch in the back plate heading for the ground. The upper brushes were not even contacting. It scared the hell out of me when I hit that rebuilt starter. The motor turned over so fast I thought the fan blast was going to pull it out of the shop by itself.. Good luck on geting yours going better. Tallperson
