Andrew: I have to go along with Hal's test check, you should do that anyhow before you remove the distributor. First I would check to see if rotor turns without engine turning. My first reaction was someone switched some spark plug wires on you but that didn't happen as you were driving home. My next suggestion and I had this happen once, there is a very small gear drive in housing just ahead of distributor. This transfers power from timing gears to the distributor. When mine went, it would get off a few degrees, act like your description, then quit. I turned it a bit on starter it did come right once, and started but smooth running was short lived. I removed the distributor cap and found I could turn the rotor quite freely, although it would catch in spots. The small gear was striped.
