I would prefer to use the word "tap", rather than "pound". The threaded end goes IN. I don't understand why yours is so difficult. There is a flat tapered surface on one side of the pin. Thus, tightening the nut draws the pin in tight. I suppose yours could be rusted, but it should come out. DO NOT try to drive it out by hitting the exposed end in the picture, you will be tightnening it more. Look at www.steelwheelranch.com and call Mike Bunck (I'm at the wrong computer and don't have his phone numbe). He will have the parts you need, also a used water pump, or a new one, if you can accept one made in China. His is completely honest, his prices are fair.
