T/A in 560

I recently noticed that when I pulled my TA lever back on my 560 it did not shift down. I also noticed a lot of pressure when pushed in on the clutch to shift it and it was very hard to do. The pressure feels like the clutch doen not disengage all the way. I adjusted the clutch and TA and now when I pull the lever back it make a grinding noise down on the side where rod goes into the side of the tractor for the TA. I am assuming it is going out, IS this trues or maybe a gear in it somewhere is bad. How do you find out without splitting the tractor?
