I had the same problem on my H, but the H has a plate that can be removed to give a bit more room to work, so I had no problem getting the new tube in. The one that drove me nuts was the pilot bearing - the flywheel on was supposed to have a recessed zerk to grease the bearing, but after looking and cleaning and looking again I couldn"t find one. Turns out that the flywheel had been replaced with one out of a Super H. The SH flywheel is bigger and does not have the grease fitting. To add to an already long post - I put a Super H head, cam, and step-head pistons into the old gal when I rebuilt her last year and so was greatful for the larger SH clutch.
