Take the shifter lever back off and look down in there. Make sure all the slots in the shifter rails are aligned. I bet when you put the shifter back in, you accidentally knocked it out of alignment.

If that's not the case, then you've got major surgery ahead. You need to open the transmission case and figure out why the slider gear for top gear is no longer attached to the shifter fork.

Just sitting in the open wouldn't have caused this. Most tractors spend their entire lives outdoors. Some rust away, unused, for years and this doesn't happen.

Maybe some kids were climbing around on the tractor when you weren't looking, playing with the levers?
