jlow, The 424 diesel is a pretty simple engine to work one. Get a shop manual for the torque "specs" and valve settings, or email me and I'll forward that info to you, if you are going to do this before you have time to get a manual. Have the head checked for cracks and "flatness" before putting it back on. Could I ask you a favor? I have a 424 diesel, and the battery is mounted in a non-standard location. I have a parts book, which shows a couple of battery trays, but not how (and where) they mount on the tractor chassis. Could you post, or email me a photo of the battery mounting area, or at least reply with a verbal description? Does your tractor have power steering? Mine has add-on power steering, which I want to change to a better system. I am in northern ND, and these little utilities are very UNCOMMON up here. If anyone knows of a parts yard that may have a PS front axle, please let me know.
