Transmission Help

Hello,
Anyone help with a 424 International stuck in reverse gear? The shifter goes into 2-3, and high gear, at which time the transmission is in two gears and bogs the motor. The tractor is in reverse when the shift lever is in neutral. Is there any way I can diagnose this without pulling the top of the transmission off? I would really appriciate help here.
