The tranny main shaft has a gear right in the front that turns the counter shaft constantly as long as the clutch is engaged. When you shift into a gear the counter shaft turns the main shaft. So it is quite possible that that gear is bad and it will grind no matter which gear you shifted into. The only thing is that it probably would do that in nuetral, unless it only does it under load.
