clunk in gear case

I have a restoreed 51 M that started to clunk in all gears after I changed hypoid oil. what I took out was so thick it wasworse than honey or sorgum. 15 gals. replaced with 90 weight and now it clunks evenly as if a tooth is missing on a gear. any ideas before I split the tractor?
