It's possible that there is a problem with the shifter - bent fork not pushing the gear all the way, detent not seating to hold it in place - but it souonds more like a worn out gear. The way that particular gear works - it's not like two rotating opposite each other, it's more like coupling two shafts together - worn teeth will serve to push the two ends apart. You're going to need to take the cover off. Not a giant job, even I managed it. At least you don't have to split the tractor. Step one is get a service manual. You can order what you need from here at YTMAG. I recommend the H Service Manual and the I&T. And an Owners Manual for when you get finished. I would stay away from the Tran and Final Drive manual - if it's the one I got it covers several other models that are too unlike the H to be much use. $25 to $30 apiece seems like a lot compared to the free advice you'll get here, but the pictures are worth it.
