A gear that is chipped on the side away from the driving force will make noise when loaded backwards. I would live with it unless it is getting worse and worse. You can "see" into the trans to a limited degree by taking off the belt pulley (or cover if it is not equipped). There is a chance that you might see the problem if it is on the main shaft teeth.
