I agree with your comments on corn usage. In 2004, 11% of the US corn crop went to ethanol and replaced only 1.7% of our annual gasoline supply. So, if we used 100% for ethanol we would still only replace about 16% of our gasoline. However, cellulosic ethanol plants will be coming online soon that can make ethanol from high-cellulose stock suck as cornstalks, switchgrass, waste paper, and even some testing is underway with landfill garbage. When these technologies are brought online I think we will move away from corn (and other grains) and again increase our ethanol production.
