When I worked at the welding shop we would fill gas tanks clear full with water then dump it out and weld.

If we concerned that we didn't get all the gas fumes out we would stick a torch in from a distance or tied to a broomhandle.

But useing the water never once had a flare up.

If the tank has been empty for some time, there should be no problem.

Just make sure you get all the water out before remounting the tank.
