I'd check a couple of things. Is the phone line plugged into the line jack and not the phone jack on the modem? Have you uninstalled the drivers and also deleted the modem from the device manager, rebooted the computer then loaded new drivers? Did you check the modem options in the control panel and see if they're still valid for the new modem? Did you look at the Internet Options in the control panel for new changes? Hopefully, your computer wasn't on when you took the lightning strike or you might have some corrupted files on the hard drive. Good luck.
