It is not possible to mount the shifting hardware on top of the lid. I think an M parts book wiil have a picture of the two hole reversing lid. You cannot take a regular M lid and convert it. The cast areas for attaching the shifting hardware are not present. See my post below. That $1000 you mentioned would be more than adequate to fabricate a reversing lid for you.
